CONCLUSION (Hay soak report 2007, (copyright EC group)

Using hot water for long periods of time to soak hay is best for extracting NSC and potassium. The hot water was more efficient than leaching out the NSC and potassium than the cold water. This is due to the fact that solids are more soluble in hot water than they are in cold water. The alfalfa hay was significantly lowered in these areas. The Timothy hay did not show consistent results.
In the individual trials, the Alfalfa hay showed that soaking the hay for thirty minutes worked significantly better than soaking it for just fifteen minutes. The thirty minute soak with a change of the water after fifteen minutes proved to be the best method and the fifteen minute soak with a constant flow of water was the second most effective. The method using constant flow was significantly better than the thirty minute soak that it has been hypothesized by our group members that if this method had been used for thirty minutes it would have given the best results.
The Timothy hay showed similar results when each trial was examined. It differentiated from the results from the Alfalfa hay because the most NSC and potassium were extracted from the method using constant flow. This time the method using a fifteen minute change was the second most efficient. The mean however showed that the thirty minute soak with the fifteen minute change was the most effective. The other difference was that in all trials, the levels of NSC rose from the levels in the original dry sample.
Results for the Alfalfa hay were roughly fifty percent better than when hay similar to this had been soaked for one to two hours when the individual trials were examined. The mean led to different conclusions because of imprecise data. The results found through this experiment proved to be quicker and more efficient than other results from methods tried in the past to lower NSC and potassium in order to prevent laminitis and HYPP.
